“Well, well, well,” you’re thinking. “Look who decided to come back and post something on The Substack.”

I know. It’s been a bit of a week. I started the week editing and submitting a short story. What that means is, I have nothing to share here. If it makes you feel better I think the story is really good and when it gets rejected I’m going to be super sad, but excited to share it with y’all.

What it also means is that I kinda hit a wall. The high that comes after finishing something good lasts about an hour for me, and then I immediately descend into hating every idea that comes into my head.

So, what did I do this week? Honestly, I wrote a lot. I’ve got four short stories (or maybe starts of longer stories) that I’m struggling with. I hated them as my fingers put the words on the digital page and when I finished them I proudly stood up and declared ‘meh’.

Ugh, I wish I had been born one of those kids whose parents constantly told them everything they ever did was great. I bet that does amazing things for your confidence. I know being told you’re not good enough doesn’t do much.

Next week I’m going to share all of these partially written pieces and let the world decide if I’m untalented, insane or just insanely untalented.

Anyway, here’s what you missed this week:Obviously nothing, I just told you that.

What I’m reading this week:Someone You Can Build A Nest In by John Wiswell- This summer, I was lucky enough to stumble upon a few of John’s short stories and loved them. Someone You Can Build A Nest In is funny, dark, charming, and romantic. Look it is a story about a shapeshifter who falls in love with a human who, it turns out, is hunting for a shapeshifter who cursed her family. I mean…c’mon.

What I’m watching this week:Breaking Bad- You don’t need me to tell you that Breaking Bad is great. And if you do need me to tell you that then- Breaking Bad is great. Much like re-watching The Sopranos or The Wire it is fascinating watching when you know where it’s going. Seeing all the seeds planted that, on your first watch, you didn’t even realize were seeds. The little details, the showing not telling, the Jesse using acid in his bathtub without realizing the consequences… absolutely brilliant.

The Brewers went 4-2 since last week’s update. They won their first four games then blew the last two playing in a AAA stadium in Vegas. The stadium is too small and the temps were ridiculous. Like, I get it, the A’s are moving to Vegas when their new stadium is done, but if you’re going to play a couple of random games in the desert, why make it in the middle of July? Anyway, the Brewers still could have swept the A’s. They’re coming up on a stretch where they don’t have a day off for over two weeks (and even have a doubleheader crammed in there) so they can’t afford to be losing games to the stupid A’s.
